[ESRI software] Tags used with text in ArcGIS that allow formatting to be modified for a portion of a text string. This allows the creation of mixed-format text where, for example, one word in a sentence is underlined.

In ArcView, the spatial data for themes falls into two major categories: feature data sources and image data sources.
Which format should you use?
First off, if you are working with other people who have agreed upon a format to use, then you should probably use that format.

There are two types of formats, those that preserve and use the actual ground coordinates of the data and those that use alternative page coordinate description of the map.
A file format is a particular way that information is encoded for storage in a computer file.

RASTER DATA FORMATS
Raster data models incorporate the use of a grid-cell data structure where the geographic area is divided into cells identified by row and column. This data structure is commonly called raster.
If you receive ARC/INFO data in interchange format you can use IMPORT71 to convert it to a data source in a format that can be added to a project or view in ArcView (or used in other mapping programs).
15. Creating Layouts: Basic Formatting
In this section you will create a "Layout" of your maps. In the section that follows, you will then convert the Layouts into Adobe PDF files that can be shared electronically.
Format - Data developed for a particular GIS software package is stored in a format or structure that is unique to that software package. If you are using a different GIS software package, it may not be able to read or understand that format.
Format. Data should be available in an Esri software supported file format and coordinate system.
Redistribution. The contributed data must be available for royalty-free redistribution.

In case of a 3D sites file, the module generates a 3D vector map. Attributes are written into an attribute table.

data formats - The specific patterns into which data are systematically arranged for use by a computer or specific software. There are both proprietary data formats and public-domain data formats.
Data Formatting
MapServer accepts a number of different geospatial data formats, including GML.
Image Formats: TIFF, GeoTIFF, JPEG, GIF, RLC, PNG and BMP formats. R2V supports most image types, including 1-bit bi-level, 8-bit grayscale, and color images (4-bit, 8-bit, and 24-bit). Most TIFF image compressions are supported.
Final Format:The documents should be submitted in Adobe PDF format so that they can be opened in the Acrobat viewer which has no risk of modifying the document or passing macro viruses.
