[cartography] A list of geographic place-names and their coordinates. Entries may include other information as well, such as area, population, or cultural statistics.

 


Gazetteer: Often used to standardise place names or to locate place names within a hierarchy. These are often stored in a Relational Database Management System.

gazetteer A work of geographic reference that supplies place name and location information. When a place name is known, a gazetteer can provide the coordinates of the place. Most atlases contain gazetteers.

In situations where data have been collected and assigned to postal or area codes, it is usually necessary to convert these to geographic coordinates by use of a definitive directory or gazetteer file.

If no easily-obtainable official gazetteer or names Web site exists, official documents produced by the country are consulted, or failing that, well-respected atlases are used for advice.
