Generalisation
As the area of land that is being mapped becomes larger (eg Tasmania instead of Hobart) fewer individual features are able to be shown on a map.

1 Generalisation
Generalization Maps contain a certain level of detail depending upon its scale and purpose. Large scale maps usually contain more detail than small scale maps.

[edit] Map generalisation
A good map has to provide a compromise between portraying the items of interest (or themes) in the right place for the map scale used, against the need to annotate that item with text or a symbol, ...

Generalisation The simplification of reality or reduction of detail. Generalize 1. Reduce the number of points, or vertices, used to represent a line.
2. Increase the cell size and resample data in a raster format GIS.

Figure 8 shows the frequency distributions for all 5 surfaces (original and four levels of generalisation) which also shows a progressive decrease of the proportion of small contributing area values as the surface becomes increasingly generalised.

Scale of source map, given as a ratio, and the original scale (where the source map is an enlargement or generalisation from another map).
Name of the map and the map series (where appropriate).

Spectrum of an operator, in functional analysis (a generalisation of the spectrum of a matrix)
Spectrum of a ring, in commutative algebra
Spectrum of a C*-algebra
Spectrum of a theory, in mathematical logic
Stone space of Boolean algebra ...

If the resolution is changed significantly, then the behaviour of the generalisation or refinement will depend on the model of the process being represented. This will be very different for categorical versus numerical data.

The construction of iso-lines or iso-surfaces in 3 dimensional case however aims to create and visualize aesthetic features and not too accurate ones (because of the generalisation of individual function values into interval membership, ...
