Geo-referencing

GIS GeoreferenceGeorelational Model

Geo-referencing: The process of applying a coordinate system to a layer of data. This often involves converting to a real-world coordinate system such as the British National Grid.

Geo-Referencing Using GeoTIFF or Control Points: Vector data can be geo-coded or geo-referenced to a real world coordinate system (e.g., UTM, Latitude/Longitude) using GeoTIFF, user selected control points or a World file (TFW).

Geo-referencing is the cornerstone of GIS. In the mid-1600s the French mathematician, René Descartes established the Cartesian coordinate system that is still in use today.

Activity data tied to specific locations in space (either through geo-referencing or address-matching) is now available in many locations.

AABSyS also undertakes large scale cadastral mapping projects which includes scanning of hard copy maps, digitisation of the maps using proper layer structure, geo-referencing the individual maps, ...

The most common method of data creation is digitization, where a hard copy map or survey plan is transferred into a digital medium through the use of a computer-aided design (CAD) program, and geo-referencing capabilities.

NOTES
Maps are saved in the user's ~/.gpsdrive directory. Geo-referencing information is added to the user's ~/.gpsdrive/map_koord.txt file.
JPEG output requires the pngtopnm and pnmtojpeg programs from the NetPBM tools.

An exception is if the two quads do not match because of differences in color between them or differences in geo-referencing accuracy.

Edge-matching and geo-referencing the images (associating the pixels with real world coordinates) improves the utility of the scanned images by providing a seamless view of the raster data in an image catalog.

Needless to say, the geo-referencing status of grids must carefully be considered when archiving data for potential future re-use as this can seriously affect the overall accuracy of the quoted co-ordinates.
