geocode: The process of identifying a location by one or more x,y coordinates from another location description such as an address.

A procedure where objects in a non-geocoded database are geocoded using an address field such as a street address.

In order to geocode, a geocoding service must first be defined.

Location may be annotated by x, y, and z coordinates of longitude, latitude, and elevation, or by other geocode systems like ZIP Codes or by highway mile markers. Any variable that can be located spatially can be fed into a GIS.
