In this greyscale test, you should be able to distinguish each of the nine different shades of grey. If the greys blend together, your monitor gamma or brightness needs adjustment.

color=grey to assign a greyscale colormap. In a future version of GRASS r.in.gdal will likely be upgraded to automatically emit greyscale colormaps.
Data Types Most GDAL data types are supported.

For single color maps with dirty and smearing background, such as old maps or blue prints, they can be scanned as 8-bit greyscale and cleaned using image processing techniques, such as background removal.

For the orthophotos, the color map is a 256-value greyscale ramp. Other raster data, such as elevation models, can be mapped to color ramps that display elevation ranges, as shown in the image directly above.
