Land Information System (LIS) - Similar to a GIS, an LIS is designed specifically to create, visualize, analyze, report and publish land-based data such as parcel information, zoning, land use, ownership and general property information.

Using information contained in the National Topographic Data Base, the Centre for Topographic Information in Ottawa produces topographic maps at scales of 1/50 000 and 1/250 000.

Spatial information can be represented in two distinctly different forms. Satellite images, for example, usually app ear as raster data, a gridded matrix in which the position of each data point is indicated by its row and column numbers.

spatial information Information having to do with a place on the earth. This can be a map feature such as a property line or information about a map feature such as the name of a property owner.

What information can I find on an air photo?
Unlike a map, features on an aerial photograph are not generalized or symbolized. Air photos record all visible features on the Earth's surface from an overhead perspective.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
What is GIS?
A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer-based tool for storing, viewing, analyzing and integrating all types of mapped data.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become indispensable to archaeologists, allowing studies of site distribution, transit routes, topography, and environment.

Geographic information contains either an explicit geographic reference such as a latitude and longitude or national grid coordinate, or an implicit reference such as an address, postal code, census tract name, forest stand identifier, or road name.

Geographic information science, the science of GIS, is concerned with geographic concepts, the primitive elements used to describe, analyze, model, reason about, and make decisions on phenomena distributed on the surface of the earth.

Much of the information discussed is applicable to all types of maps, but for the exercises associated with this tutorial, the emphasis will be on information contained in a 7.5 minute topographic map.
