Inset Map: More detailed (larger scale) representation of a specific area on a map usually placed in an uncluttered portion of the same sheet as the smaller scale main map.

The inset on the right shows the elevation data as a wire-frame plot with the slope map draped over the surface. Note the alignment of the slope classes with the surface configuration-flat slopes where it looks flat; steep slopes where it looks steep.

An inset is a small map which is included with the main map, but it is from a different area. These may be at the same or different scales to the main map.
