Labeling Data Based on an Attribute
You can use values in a theme attribute table as text labels. To do this, you open the Theme Properties dialog box. This dialog is accessed by choosing Properties from the Theme menu.

Dynamic Label Application
Maplex for ArcGIS enables you to place labels correctly the first time based on your specifications for placement priorities and styles, label fitting strategies, and conflict detection rules.

The label information that must be provided in the labels file is: TEXT: Lines in multiple line labels will appear one above the next. More than one line of text can be specified by notating the end of a line with a '\n'.

The label properties define the string used to label each polygon. In this case we want to use an attribute that is associated with each polygon. This shapefile contains an attribute column called 'FSA'.

To communicate spatial information effectively, features such as rivers, lakes, and cities need to be labeled. Over centuries cartographers have developed the art of placing names on even the densest of maps.

Labeling is always tricky. Labels must be positioned, symbolized, and sized to avoid obscuring important map features.

LABEL
An ALPHANUMERIC element, used with the VECTOR DATA MODEL, that displays attribute values or identifiers for points, lines, or polygons.
LAND COVER
The surface materials, such as crops and water, that are found in an area.

Label placement - The process of adding labels to a digital map. This can be done manually or using an automated label placement program.

We labeled three typical hazy patterns A, B, and C. The one at A, at a bend in the Canadian River, is especially prominent, and occurs over a known oil field.
