Customizing Labels
When you're adding text and labels to several themes in a view, you can save time by editing the default settings for ArcView's Text and Label tools.
If a FreeType/TrueType font is set with d.font.freetype, the font specified in the labels file will be ignored.
Labels:
Text annotation posted on a map near a spatial feature.
Same as one wherein the source of the value of each label is from a linked database record.
Symbol or set of symbols identifying the contents of a file, memory, tape, or record.

Labels are a critical component of elevation maps. A properly labeled contour map helps the reader to quickly interpret the shape of the terrain. If numbers are placed close to each other, it means that the terrain is steep.
Box labels and forms will feature prominently in facility operations and therefore should be carefully designed.

Do not use labels in place of proper symbols. A map displays the patterns of underlying data much better through an appropriate symbolization than by posting the values with labels.
Though the labels and symbology used in Streetmap may not be exactly what you would choose, the beauty of this app is that you can use it to clip out your own data that you may store to your own disk, and symbolize however you want.
To style the labels, we have used the font properties. These are to be used in the same way as CSS code.
