In everyday terms we are interested in specifications, design artifacts, and database schemas for land information systems. Two forces motivate our work.

Land information systems (LIS)
Real Property boundary determination
Hydrography, navigation, topographic and spatial computing
Surveying (including land, cadastral, aerial, mining and engineering surveying)
Construction layout, route design ...

Often, the application of GISs is termed Land Information Systems (LISs). Dueker and Kjerne (1989) described LISs and GISs as containing data primarily describing land records. Vonderohe et al.

Spatial databases along with the P-mapping are used to maintain a public records GIS or community land information systems (e.g. [Ventura, Niemann, Sutphin, & Chenoweth (2002)]). These are just a few of the uses of GIS in the community.

vehicle routing and scheduling ...

The most common forms of land information systems describe property ownership, land use, land value, tax assessment, and property boundaries.

Once in digital format, they can be viewed and printed at various scales, and are extremely valuable in the development of land information systems and land use planning issues such as zoning, transportation, and agriculture.
