Landsat Data Continuity Mission
Landsat has provided the science community with an important archive of land feature observations. Plans are underway for the next generation of land-observation systems.

LANDSAT TM
Landsat TM is more advanced multispectral scanner than the MSS system. The spectral resolution encompasses seven bands that range from visible blue to thermal infrared. Included is a Mid Infrared (MIR) band.

Landsat is a system of satellites which scan the earth at a variety of wavelengths. The satellites return information that can be used to inventory and analyze a variety of natural and human resources.

A couple of articles ago I outlined how to access Geogratis Landsat 7 data and to combine bands 1, 2 and 5 ( or any three bands between 1 and 7) to produce a 30m true-color RGB composite.

There are more data choices coming online with new private and public sector satellites. Modelers should be aware and flexible to make use of the most appropriate resolution data.

The accompanying Landsat Thematic Mapper image shows a false-color infrared image of the same area in 30-meter pixels, or picture elements.

The raw image data (LANDSAT TM and SPIN-2) used to create the sample images are provided by the US Government through Eastman Kodak Company as part of the Multi-Modality Image Fusion Study project and are used here with their permission.
