When a layer is added to a map document, by default all of its features are displayed. However, sometimes you may wish to display only a selected set of those features.

Viewing PostGIS Layers using QGIS
Click the 'Add PostGIS Layer' button . This will open up a window.

layer : Alogical set of thematic data described and stored in a map library. Layers organize a map library by subject matter, e.g., soils, roads, wells, and extend over the entire geographic area defined by the spatial index of the map library.

Layer: The GIS data model represents the world by sub-dividing features on the earth's surface according to a specific theme. Each theme is georeferenced.

Layer - Distinct map theme. Usually a separate GIS file (TWS).
Light attenuation - Absorption, scattering, or reflection of light by water, chlorophyll a, dissolved substances, or particulate matter.

Layers: A logical separation of mapped data usually representing a theme, such as roads, political boundaries, etc. Layers are all registered to one another by means of a common coordinate system.

layer -- an integrated, areally distributed, set of spatial data usually representing entity instances within one theme, or having one common attribute or attribute value in an association of spatial objects.

layer
A thematic set of spatial data described and stored in an ArcStorm database or a LIBRARIAN map library. Layers organize a database or map library by subject matter (e.g., soils, roads, and wells).

Layer is a subdivision of a CAD or GIS database containing related data. Layers can be visualized as "transparencies" which allow the user to view and analyze information selectively by theme.

Layer A logical set of thematic data, usually organized by subject matter.
Library A collection of repeatedly used items such as a symbol library-often used graphic objects shown on a map-or often used program subroutines.

Layers - Refers to the various "overlays" of data each of which normally deals with one thematic topic. These overlays are registered to each other by the common coordinate system of the database.

layered complex An intrusive igneous body in which there are layers of varying mineral content.
levees Banks of sand and silt along stream bank built by deposition in small increments during successive floods.

Layers("Selected Layer").SearchExpression method is used to search the specific data and collect it as a Recordset. The Recordset.Fields ("Selected Item").Value method is used to capture the value of searched attribute data.

Layer files in ArcGIS specify how a particular shapefile is to be symbolized.

Layers or features may be deleted or renamed by right-clicking on selected nodes.
A feature may be dragged from one layer to another to allow features to participate in more than a single layer.

LAYER
A usable subdivision of a data set, generally containing elements of a particular theme. The subdivisions are registered to a common CO-ORDINATE SYSTEM, thus enabling analysis and integration across the various themes.

Map layers are organized as a layer tree, in the window below the buttons. Layers can include raster and vector maps, text, map enhancements (scale and north arrow, grids, and frames), and commands (where any GRASS command be written).

map layers Spatial features of a particular type maintained as separate GIS datasets that can be combined in a digital map as if they were different maps laid over each other on a light table.

The layer model shown in Table 2 includes interactions that are purely technical, such as the exchange of data between systems.

The way maps and other data have been stored or filed as layers of information in a GIS makes it possible to perform complex analyses.

These might be represented as several different layers where each layer holds data about a particular kind of feature (e.g. roads). Each feature is linked to a position on the graphical image of a map.

Cryptogams: nonvascular plants such as lichens and mosses that make up the ground or surface layer of vegetation.

For example, dots or points on a map layer may represent the location of schools, a line may represent a river, and a polygon may represent the outline of an area such as a county.

Perhaps the most common is allowing the user to define a priority for data layers in combination with a tolerance value. Considering the soils and forest stand example the user could define a layer that takes precedence, e.g.

Conflation functions are used to ensure that common boundaries between different data layers share the exact coordinates.
