SCALE
The scale of a National Topographic System map is expressed by a figure such as 1/50 000 or 1/250 000.

 


Legends placed with the mouse are not saved to the display window's history for automatic redraw. By setting the Debug level to 1 (see g.gisenv) the corresponding at setting can be determined.

Creating a Default Legend
When you add a theme to a view, ArcView searches the data's folder for a legend file with the same name as the shapefile.

Legend elements
Any layers that are turned on in the Table of Contents will be displayed in legend elements.

Legend - The description of the symbology representing features on a map.
Map - A graphic representation of geographically distributed phenomena. The information displayed may be in the form of symbols or signs.

Legend and Title are the two elements of a map which are fundamental to a map being understood and used in the way intended by the map maker. This map is an example of what can go wrong if a map does not have a Title and/or a Legend.

Legend: The reference area on a map that lists and explains the colors, symbols, line patterns, shadings, and annotation used on the map. The legend often includes the scale, origin, orientation, and other map information.

Legend: The part of the drawn map explaining the meaning of the symbols used to code the depicted geographical elements.

The Legend Editor is a complex dialog providing access to almost all ArcView's capabilities to classify and modify the display of features. Every feature has a geographic location.

The legend and margins of topographic quadrangles contain a myriad of other useful information. Township and range designations, UTM coordinates, and minute and second subdivisions are printed along the margins of the map.

In the legend, you see the name of a number of VDCs under VDC theme. You see different colours for different VDCs, and the same colour for different VDCs.

Now you will add a legend to your Layout. Use the Legend Frame tool by choosing it in the button menu bar. Click and hold down on the "View Frame" button to get a button pull down menu. Choose the second button - the "Legend Frame.

When choosing a colour sequence or legend keep it simple. Limit the number of colours to seven, plus or minus two, because seven seems to be the optimum number for a viewer's short term memory.

Security Tips : Hoaxes and Urban Legends
This month’s security tip comes from CSCIC’s Hoaxes and Urban Legends circular.

To do this, click once on the legend element named "County Boundaries". Notice that the Theme becomes "raised" or "highlighted."

This scale of measurement is usually depicted and explained in the map legend. A rainfall map indicating the number of millimeters per year in different locations would illustrate interval data.
