LIS is the acronym for land information system. LIS and GIS are virtually synonymous, although it could be maintained that an LIS is but one component of a GIS.

LIS: Land Information System. Manual or computer-based information system used to store, retrieve, display, and plot spatial and textural data relating primarily to land features and characteristics.

Land Information System (LIS) - Similar to a GIS, an LIS is designed specifically to create, visualize, analyze, report and publish land-based data such as parcel information, zoning, land use, ownership and general property information.
