Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata

[standards] A publication authored by the FGDC that specifies the information content of metadata for digital geospatial datasets.

Metadata
Metadata, sometimes called "data about data", describe the content, quality, condition, and other characteristics of data. It is through the evaluation of the metadata that a user can determine if the data meets the user's needs.

Metadata
Metadata is a protocol for GIS in which the user makes note of certain information about the data behind the files. For example, one should enter the source map used for digitizing, the projection, etc.

Metadata - Documenting data is critical to preserving its usefulness throughout time. Metadata is a component of data which describes the content, quality, condition, and other characteristics of data. It is "data about data.

Metadata Issues with Map Coordinate Systems
Given that geographic datasets are primarly concerned with spatial references, we really must have metadata (data about the data) describing the coordinate system that is embedded in the files.

Metadata: Data about data. This often includes the data's source, accuracy, data type, projection, date of origination and other general descriptions.

Metadata - Formal documentation describing the characteristics of a specific geospatial data set.

Metadata
Information that describes the content, quality, condition, origin, and other characteristics of data or other pieces of information. The DC Federated Data Model provides the District government standards for metadata.

metadata -- data about the content, quality, condition, and other characteristics of data.
name -- the name of an extended element. The extended element name must not be the name of any other element in the Standard.

Metadata
Metadata is information about the content, quality, condition, and other characteristics of information kept in a database.

Metadata Documentation
The first step will be to document the data by developing metadata files for each database available. The metadata file is used for two roles. 1) develop information that will be used to evaluate the data for use in a GIS ...

Metadata: Information describing a data set. A digital maps;s metadata might state its scale, revision date, author, accuracy standards, and other pertinent information.

As mentioned in Section 5, tools are being developed to assist in the automatic creation of metadata records.

Metadata is most simply described as data about data. This is important in determining the source, scale, accuracy and intended audience of a particular data set. The Federal Geographic Data Committee has a list of metadata standards on their website.

metadata Data about data. This should at least include dataset names with descriptions of what they contain, coordinate system & datum, theoretical accuracy, source document names with dates & scales, data conversion methods, update history, ...

Metadata (also spelled meta-data) is data describing data. For example, a listing that describes what attributes are allowed to be in data sets is called "meta-information".

Metadata content standards from the U.S. government (FGDC), ISO, EEU, ANZLIC, and other organizations. These define the metadata contents that are recorded in documents for GIS datasets.

Metadata - Data about data or descriptions of the data in a data file, including date of collection, sources, map projection, scale, quality, format and custodian.

Map metadata information is stored in a "hist" file which may be appended to by using the history option. Currently this is limited to 50 lines of text with a maximum line length of 78 characters. Any input larger than this will be truncated.

Header metadata are affixed to the beginning of the image data and are composed of a variable number of ASCII-text metadata entries.

These 'metadata' standards allow mapmakers to record detailed information regarding such things as data sources, accuracy, limitations, copyright, projection and coordinate details, authorship etc, ...

Digital Geospatial Metadata - DGM: DGM was approved in June 1994 by the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC). DGM describes the specifications for the content, quality, condition, and other characteristics of metadata.

A stamp is a metadata like label which points to the particular view point and resolution, that is each stamp consists of two values, the first value relates to the view point (e.g. 'transportation vehicle') the second to the resolution (e.g.

A spatial database catalog or library has four components: metadata (information about the spatial data), index map (showing locations of other maps), graphic previews (static snapshots, such as GIF images), and spatial data in a digital format.

For such geographic information to be meaningful, it must be accompanied by "metadata" d ocumenting the source, description, specifications, accuracy, time of acquisition, and quality of each data element.

On the left hand side, scroll down and select Metadata, then read through the included Metadata information, taking particular note of the pixel size of 30,-30.

On-line availability varies from simple descriptions with agency addresses to searchable databases with metadata, locality maps, and/or browse images.

A full description of each code should be provided as part of the metadata. The coding of features should follow an approved classification system as adopted by state and federal agencies.

A Data Dictionary is a form of metadata or 'data about the data.' Information found in a data dictionary typically are names of the data, information about the attributes, and information about any relational tables to the spatial datasets.
