MSSMultispectral scanner. An instrument on some satellites used for imaging the earth. An MSS image will have data recorded by the scanner from three or more bands of the electromagnetic spectrum.

LANDSAT MSS
The first Landsat launched by the United Sates was on July 23, 1972. They were used in an effort to collect data about the earth's resources from a satellite as stated by Arnoff.

The MSS FPA, or Focal Plane Array consisted of 24 square optical fibers extruded down to .

The four MSS band designations are numbered differently for Landsats 1, 2, and 3 and Landsats 4 and 5:
Landsats 1,2, & 3
Spectral Bands Landsats 4 & 5
Spectral Bands Use

There is no successful business model in providing MSS services only. Motorola and Loral/Qualcomm proved that with their Iridium and Globalstar MSS systems. Both original ventures ended in Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The TM sensor provides significant improvements in spatial, spectral, and radiometric resolution compared to the MSS.

Multispectral scanners (MSS) are sensors that detect emitted and reflected energy electrically, rather than photographically, with the electric signal being converted to digital form for image processing and interpretation.

developed various different products to process satellite imagery from AVHRR, Landsat MSS, Landsat TM and SPOT imagery into land cover / land use maps, map deforestation, and assist in locating oil reserves.

The readme file tells us what the Landsat MSS band is for the image, but we have to look elsewhere for the definition of what those bands represent. For this information, we have to look at a metadata page on the EROS Data Center web site.

The archive includes thousands of Landsat TM and Landsat ETM files, and many Landsat MSS, MODIS and other images.
