Optical Disk

GIS Optical Character RecognitionOptical Fiber

optical diskA digital data storage technology that uses optical media to store information. Optical disks are slower, but store more data and cost less per unit of stored data than magnetic disks.

An optical disk, slightly less than 5 inches in diameter, used to store up to approximately 650 megabytes of data.

Records can be in any media, including paper, magnetic tape, and optical disks. Work-related records, including email, that employees produce in their homes and on their personal home computers are still the property of your organization.

A variety of magnetic and optical media are currently available for mass storage, including magnetic disks, magnetic tapes, magnetic cassettes, and optical disks.

Plotter types include: laser, electrostatic, direct thermal and pen plotter. Finally, GIS storage systems include: optical disks, magnetic disks (such as a hard drive), floppy disks or magnetic tapes.
