GIS OriginOrthophotograph

Orogeny:
A compressive tectonic process that results in intense folding, reverse faulting, crustal thickening, uplift and deep plutonic activity. A mountain-building episode.
Oscillation Ripple Marks: ...

orogeny -- n. The tectonic processes of folding, faulting, and uplifting of the earth's crust that result in the formation of mountains.
outcrop -- Any place where bedrock is visible on the surface of the Earth.

orogeny The process of mountain building.
oscillation ripple mark A symmetric ripple mark formed by waves, which move water back and forth. compare current ripple mark .

The Western Mountains are a number of diverse rock/structural units of differing ages and histories of orogeny (mountain-building). As we move westward, we notice the last major events are progressively younger.

This applies to the solid surface (orogeny; few mountains are higher than 10 km, few deep sea trenches deeper than that) as it does to the liquid surface (dynamic sea surface topography) and the earth's atmosphere.
