A recent development in ETL software is the implementation of parallel processing. This has enabled a number of methods to improve overall performance of ETL processes when dealing with large volumes of data.

Parallel processing - The coordinated processing of a computer program by multiple processors that work on different parts of the program, using their own operating system and memory resources.
This class of models is a near ideal a pplication for parallel processing since a typical model consists of a large number of cells that can be simulated semi-independently.
The expert system primarily involves parallel processing utilizing combinatorial mathematics to permit the development of "search engines" which speeds up the processing of logical inferences to expand the domain of knowledge-based systems.
