The Plate Carrée or Equidistant Cylindrical Projection or Geographic Projection, is a very simple map projection that has been in use since the earliest days of spherical cartography.

plate -- n. Rigid parts of the Earth's crust and part of the Earth's upper mantle that move and adjoin each other along zones of seismic activity.

Plate Tectonics:
Geologic theory that the bending (folding) and breaking (faulting) of the solid surface of the earth results from the slow movement of large sections (plates) of that surface.

plate boundaries The zones of seismic activity long which plates are in contact. These may coincide with continental margins , but usually do not.

The theory of plate tectonics is another important unifying idea in geology. Essentially, the theory suggests that the Earth's outer crust is composed of a number of plates that float on the mantle. This idea has been around for more than a century.
