Projections and coordinate systems are a complicated topic in GIS, but they form the basis for how a GIS can store, analyze, and display spatial data.

[map projections] A method by which the curved surface of the earth is portrayed on a flat surface. This generally requires a systematic mathematical transformation of the earth's graticule of lines of longitude and latitude onto a plane.

Projection Distance, Area, and Shape
Equal area projections preserve the property of area. On an equivalent projection all parts of the earth's surface are shown with the correct area. However, latitudinal distances are never accurate.

Projections: Maps are called projections because map-makers have to project a 3-D surface onto a 2-D map.

PROJECTION
All the ASDB coordinates have been computed using the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection. The Canadian landmass extends from UTM Zone 7 in the west to UTM Zone 22 in the east. Each zone is six degrees of Longitude in width.

Stereographic projection preserves circles and angles. That is, the image of a circle on the sphere is a circle in the plane and the angle between two lines on the sphere is the same as the angle between their images in the plane.

This creates a projection file (.prj) stored with the shapefile. None of the data is altered; it is simply defining the projection.

PROJECTIONS
4-4. A map projection is the systematic drawing of lines representing the meridians and parallels (the graticule) on a flat surface. Different projections have unique characteristics and serve differing purposes.

Projection is a fundamental component of mapmaking. A projection is a mathematical means of transferring information from a three-dimensional curved surface to a two-dimensional medium - paper or a computer screen.

Changing Projections
One of the hardest parts of visualizing the historical fire data generated by the DX-Oracle interface was referencing it with other data sets. The fire's location is recorded in geographic longitude and latitude coordinates.

Mercator's projection was created (by Mercator) by essentially wrapping a cylinder around the equator and then projecting lines of latitude onto the cylinder according to a mathematical formula (a projection).

Conformal Projection
Projection which preserves the original shape of the area of interest but not the area or distance.

This is not a projection but a coordinate system that came into use in the United States in the 1930s when the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey used it to provide a common reference system to surveyors and mappers.

Anyways, I wrote the code to do the forward projection, which turned out not to be to bad. I checked it out against some locations I found on the web. Luckily the Swiss like to put both their lat/long and Swiss Grid coordinates on their websites.
