[edit] Puck
After styli, pucks are the most commonly used tablet accessory.

The basis of heads-up digitising is to use the mouse pointer to trace around the image to be digitised, recording the coordinates as it moves - in much the same manner as moving the puck on a digitising table or tablet.

Manual digitizing involves the use of a digitizing tablet and cursor tool called a "puck", a plastic device holding a coil with a set of locator cross-hairs to select and digitally encode points on a map.

Move the puck in the XY position box to the southeast corner, adjust Height and Perspective until the data surface fills the NVIZ viewer.
Select the Keyframe panel.
Click add a key frame.

An x-y coordinate digitizer consists of a large tablet and a puck. The tablet is essentially a table with a wire grid (instead of a grid paper) running through it.

When working with very long lines, or when the Dell has been running for a while, you will likely hit spots where the ArcGIS stops following the digitizer puck- you'll just get a straight line for the remainder.

In manual-digitizing techniques, a map or aerial photograph is placed on a digitizing table (Fig. 8) and a pointing device (called a cursor, puck, or mouse) is used to record coordinates of features to be extracted from the map.

The operator (here, Bill Campbell, Chief, NASA GSFC Code 935, who authored the chapter on GIS in the Landsat Tutorial Workbook) places a mobile puck with centered crosshairs over each point on the map and clicks a button to enter its position, ...

A thin pencil line, or the smallest identifiable movement of the digitizing puck, is about 1/50th of an inch. For this reason, digitizing a USGS 7.5 minute quad map can not yield a positional accuracy of better than plus or minus 40 feet.
