Raster to Vector Conversion
Scanned data, in raster format, can be "vectorized" (converted into vector data) in many high-end GIS software packages or through a stand-alone data conversion package.

Raster to vector conversion (stream network as line shape)
Raster data sets can represent drainage networks (e.g., the flow accumulation cells that have at least 5000 upstream cells).

Raster to Vector conversion of topographic maps is conducted in CAD based softwares such as AutoCAD, Microstation etc.

The raster to vector conversion algorithm works a little like electrical current. The vectors "flow" from one pixel to the next along the contour. If there is a gap in the pixels, there will be a corresponding gap in the resulting vector.

Now using raster to vector conversion utilities, auto or semi-auto conversion of the contours to vector line data (with 3D attributes) is very easily done… in short, we just created vector contours, with 3D values, ...

and attributive data are stored separately in the way best satisfying the requirements of the particular model. The procedures are performed in the model more convenient for the given task using the vector to raster or raster to vector conversions ...
