relate key : The common set of columns used to relate two attribute tables.

An operation that establishes a temporary connection between corresponding records in two tables using an item common to both (i.e., relate key).

At the same time the maps are marked-up, coding sheets are filled out with the attributes of the features to be captured and a unique id number is assigned to both the feature and the coding sheet to create a relate key.
