The Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDTS) is a file format the USGS uses for distributing geospatial data. The file format is complicated and generally handled well only by advanced software.

Acronym for Spatial Data Transfer Standard. A data exchange format for transferring different databases between dissimilar computing systems, preserving meaning and minimizing the amount of external information needed to describe the data.

Composed of representatives of several federal agencies and GIS vendors, the FGDC has the lead role in defining spatial metadata standards, which it describes in the Content Standards for Spatial Metadata (see CSSM, DGM, and SDTS.
The requirements f or creating such capacity have received a great deal of attention, for example, through the efforts to develop Spatial Data Transfer St andards (SDTS) (USGS, 1990).
The late Sol Katz wrote translators to convert SDTS DEMs into the USGS DEM format and ArcInfo grid format (the format used by Spatial Analyst). These translators, sdts2dem.exe and sdts2arc.exe, respectively, are available at many web sites.
Becaus e of the increased use of GIS technology, a new national Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDTS) has been established.

[data models] Acronym for digital elevation model. The representation of continuous elevation values over a topographic surface by a regular array of z-values, referenced to a common datum.
The Federal Information Processing Standard 173, called the spatial data transfer standard (SDTS), was established for the exchange of data between different formats.

The spatial data usually contain Arc/INFO export format (.e00 files), ArcView Shape files, AutoCAD DWF files, and SDTS (Spatial Data Transfer Standard), etc.
As we have seen in the section 5, one of the first attempts to standardize a number of geographic feature types was made by the SDTS.
