Spatial query is the comparison of XY coordinates of features/records with a user-defined spatial window (square, rectangle, circle, or multipoint polygon).

Distributed Spatial Query Processing
A distributed query is any data manipulation statement that references databases at sites other than the query site; the site that initiated the query request.

Spatial query is the process of selecting features based on location or spatial relationship (e.g., select all features within 300 feet of another; point at a set of features to select them).
