A logical set of thematic data described and stored in a map library. Layers organize a map library by subject matter (e.g., soils, roads, and wells), and extend over the entire geographic area defined by the spatial index of the map library.

The geometry of the thematic data is entirely or partially described by the base geometry dataset.
The thematic dataset holds information that also describes objects of the base dataset.

Layer A logical set of thematic data, usually organized by subject matter. Library A collection of repeatedly used items such as a symbol library-often used graphic objects shown on a map-or often used program subroutines. Line ...

base maps, data, or layers Spatial data sets that provide the background upon which more specific thematic data is overlaid and analyzed.

Base Maps provide the background upon which thematic data is overlayed and analyzed.

The fusion of geospatial data from different sources allows the creation of thematic data layers and structural features for urban and natural environments that can be critical elements of a geospatial database.

Appending is used to merge together multiple data sets that represent the same thematic data, but are contiguous. Here is an example that shows two individual shapefiles of Public Land Survey Sections.

Registration - The process of fitting thematic data layers to the base map. See also Georeferencing.

Relate - A process in relational databases that logically merges two or more databases through the use of keys.

None of this information about position, symbol, or size is contained in the thematic data; if something is not quite right, you might have hours or days of work to redo.

They are often employed as "base maps" upon which thematic data are portrayed.

Only at a scale of 1:1 could physical data be depicted at its true size and in complete detail. As use of this scale is rarely practical, all features and thematic data shown on a map must undergo a process of simplification, ...
