[map design] A map designed to convey information about a single topic or theme, such as population density or geology.

Thematic maps serve three primary purposes. First, they provide specific information about particular locations. Second, they provide general information about spatial patterns. Third, they can be used to compare patterns on two or more maps.

You now should see the thematic map of parcel values ranging from low (red) to high (dark green). Now we need to save this map as an image. To do this right click on p_area in the Layers window and choose Export.

The ArcGIS Layer Properties for Symbology allow you to change the symbology of layer features within the map. There is a great deal of flexibility about how to display features.

Thematic Maps
Beyond an understanding of the current context of a place, many documents will include maps that portray data that emphasizes a particular aspect of the context of a place. These are known as thematic maps.

Thematic Maps show the spatial distribution of a wide variety of qualitative and quantitative information. In fact, almost any subject that can be expressed as a geographical distribution can be mapped.

Topography: The relief, elevation or shape of the earth in a given area.

Basic thematic mapping and geo-query, however, only address a portion of GIS capabilities. Grid-based map analysis hasn't received the same attention in most academic programs.
