Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN) is a list of points with their coordinates that are stored into a file that also contains information about the topology.

TIN
Acronym for triangulated irregular network. A vector data structure that partitions geographic space into contiguous, nonoverlapping triangles. The vertices of each triangle are sample data points with x-, y-, and z-values.

TIN (Triangulated irregular network) - A vector-based data structure for storing terrain information in digital terrain modeling. In a TIN data model, each sample point has an x,y coordinate and a height or z value.

A TIN comprises a triangular network of vertices, known as mass points, with associated coordinates in three dimensions connected by edges to form a triangular tessellation.

The TIN surface you just created is displayed with its faces shaded by elevation and it shows its hard edges -- those which were forced by stipulating that the streams and contours should be treated as Hard Breaklines.

Once your TIN is created, you may want to alter its display. To do so, click the "Symbology" tab (under the shapefile's "Properties" menu) and select "Elevation". Select an appropriate color ramp.

Irregularly space points are stored in a Triangular Irregular Network (TIN). A TIN is a vector topological network of triangular facets generated by joining the irregular points with straight line segments.
