Landsat TM - Landsat Thematic Mapper. Earth observation satellite with seven bands at 30m spatial resolution (TWS).
Layer - Distinct map theme. Usually a separate GIS file (TWS).

LANDSAT TM
Landsat TM is more advanced multispectral scanner than the MSS system. The spectral resolution encompasses seven bands that range from visible blue to thermal infrared. Included is a Mid Infrared (MIR) band.

The TM sensor provides significant improvements in spatial, spectral, and radiometric resolution compared to the MSS.

ArcView(TM) (ESRI, Inc.) Shapefiles were also considered. Import and export of this format was also supported in ARC/INFO. Shapefiles are binary and store graphics and attributes in a nontopological format (ESRI 1995b).

Land cover change analysis has been completed for the Chesapeake Bay based on Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data.

The biggest technological improvement in the post Landsat 3 imaging system is the incorporation of the Thematic Mapper (TM), an advanced sensor that includes spectral, radiometric, and geometric design improvements.

The raw image data (LANDSAT TM and SPIN-2) used to create the sample images are provided by the US Government through Eastman Kodak Company as part of the Multi-Modality Image Fusion Study project and are used here with their permission.

Other applications for publishing geographic information on the web include MapInfo's MapXtreme, Intergraph's GeoMedia WebMap (TM), ESRI's ArcIMS, ArcGIS Server, AutoDesk's Mapguide, SeaTrails' AtlasAlive, and the open source MapServer.

See the exercise on Remote Sensing for an example of converting a 7-band LandSat TM image to a series of 7 grids. Converting single-band images is performed in the same manner, except that only a single output grid is created.
