Many topographic maps published in recent years use the UTM coordinate system as the primary grids on the map. On older topographic maps published in the United States, UTM grids are shown along the edges of the map as small blue ticks. next page ...
The UTM Grid The best known use of the transverse Mercator projection is the specialized form called Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection system.

Many maps display a UTM grid as light blue or black lines. The UTM zone for the map will be reported in the map legend. The UTM system is just one example of a map projection. Often data within a GIS will be from various map projections.
Terrain data were mapped as elevation to 500 meter UTM gridcells (Figure 1.), and as slope and aspect (Figure 2.) to 250 meter UTM gridcells. It is the elevation raster data (or DEM) which formed the base for the climate interpolations.
The continental United States is covered by 10 UTM grid zones. In the northern hemisphere each zone's northing coordinate begins at the equator as 0,000,000 and are numbered north in meters.
1200 UTM grid zones. In this case, approximate latitude and longitude (41.2, −072.7) were looked up in a gazetteer and the UTM (grid) zone was found to be 18T using a web converter or wiki.gis.com coordinates.
For example, in the case of Sydney, Australia, its UTM grid cell (zone) would be identified as: H - for the latitudinal zone it belongs to 56 - for the longitudinal zone it belongs to ...
For example sixty longitudinal zones are used for the UTM grid system. All these zones are exactly 6° wide in longitude and 164° extent in latitude.
The UTM grid extends North-south from 84oN to 80oS latitude. It is divided at the 180o meridian eastward into 60 6-degree zones. The UTM has been widely used for military and civilian topographic mapping.
The final parameter used in a UTM grid system is a fixed parameter called the scale factor.
For any position in the UTM grid, X-Y coordinates can be determined in eastings and northings. Eastings are in meters with respect to a central meridian drawn through the center of each grid zone (and given an arbitrary easting of 500,000 meters).
The UTM (WGS 84) projections cut the globe into a set of many different UTM grid zones, each being defined by a unique SRID value. This set of projections can be used to measure distances in meters for all areas of the globe.
