The clubhead should be descending at impact with the exception of the driver and the putter.

 


Angle of Approach : The angle formed by the arc of the clubhead in relation to the slope of the ground when swinging at the ball. Example: a steep angle of approach is more likely to cause a large divot.

Angle of Approach (or Attack): A term that describes the relative angle which the clubhead approaches the ball at impact which, in turn, helps determine the distance and trajectory which the ball travels.

The out-to-in forwardswing creates a steep angle of approach and a cut-across path, causing both pulls and slices. Most of the time it's a slice with the long irons and woods and a pull with the more-lofted short irons.

I would advise the student to make his downswing angle of approach shallower. He should work on making a shallow divot.
