Your high, soft approach shot falls a little bit short and into a greenside bunker, giving you that sinking feeling. As you reach the bunker, your worst fear is realized: The ball is buried.

Tight Pin Placement
The pin is cut very close to a hazard like a trap or water, thus making an approach shot more of a risk.

Play it like a buried sand lie with a 9 iron ( it will not bounce off the water like a wedge).
Use a cut shot with the blade slicing through the water at an oblique angle. Be sure to follow through.

If you are in a BURIED LIE then take a wide stand. Hold your left shoulder low throughout the stroke. Hinge your wrists and hit the heel of the club, the back edge, hard into the ground and the ball will pop out.

Almost all sand shots (except buried lies) are played with an open clubface to cut through the sand easily.

The suck-back shot and the buried lie are two extremes. More often, you encounter a situation that's somewhere in the middle, and naturally that calls for a compromise in your technique.

7) For a green-side bunker shot, with the ball on top of the sand (i.e., not buried), think follow-through. You must hit the sand first, and make sure you follow-though with your swing so that the sand and ball are lifted out of the bunker.
