The chip shot is a small swing, where the ball lands generally on the front part of the green and rolls to the cup. Club selection determines the amount of roll.

chip-and-run-- A short approach shot designed to travel in the air for a distance and then to roll (run) up on the green.
chip in-- A chip shot that is hit into the hole.
choke-up-- To grip a club closer to the head, further down the grip.

Drive: usually a long tee shot played with a wood or driver.

Chip
A lofted shot played from around the green. Usually played with a pitching wedge or a sand wedge.
Chip and run
A low shot that runs towards the flag played from near the green.

Chip - A short, generally lofted shot on or near the green.
Coefficient of Restitution (COR) - A USGA adopted test of measurement of the rate of rebound of a golf ball from a standard collision surface. The current USGA standard is 0.82.

Chip
A short shot (typically played from very close to and around the green), that is intended to travel through the air over a very short distance and roll the remainder of the way to the hole.

CHIP-AND-RUN - a chip shot played with a golf club that has a low loft to cause the ball to roll after landing usually on the putting green.

choke To grip the club further down the shaft of the club (usually to gain control of the direction of trajectory).

Chip: It's a short shot which travel through the air over a very short distance and roll the rest of the way to the hole. This shot is usually played from extremely close to and around the green.

Chip: Very short, low-flying shot to the green.
Chip-In: A holed chip.
Choke: This word has two meanings: One is to grip lower on the club than normal. The other definition in golf to play poorly because of self-imposed pressure.

Chip-Out: A shot, generally going only a short distance, made from trouble in an attempt to get the ball back in play. Chip-outs are commonly made from trees or similar positions.

Chip - A short approach consisting almost entirely of run. It is usually played from just off the green with a variety of clubs.

Chip - A short, lofted shot, from around the green.
Choke - To grip down farther on the club handle. Also a slang term used to indicate a collapse under pressure.

Chip: An approach shot played from very close to the green in which the ball is “chipped' up onto the green using a high-lofted iron, with the intention of rolling most of the way to the hole.

chip A shot to the green with a higher lofted club, such as a 9-iron, pitching wedge, or sand wedge. Ball tends to fly low and roll toward the hole.

Chip and Run: A low-running shot played around the greens where the ball spends more time on the ground than in the air. (She saved par with a beautiful chip and run that ended inches from the hole).

Chip shot
Used within yards of the green, with no intervening hazard; ball in air 1/2 or less of the total distance and rolls the rest of the way. Can use any iron, depending on distance you want the ball to roll.

CHIP OR PUTT FROM THE FRINGE?
A big part of becoming a good golfer is learning to make strong choices when faced with a variety of options on the course. A perfect example is when your ball comes to rest on the fringe of the green.

A chip shot is a low lofted shot that lands hard on the green and has lots of roll to it. The clubs that should be used for this shot are a 5 iron, 6 iron, or 7 iron. This shot requires the hands to be lower on the grip with hands ahead of the ball.

A chip shot is one which puts just enough height on the ball to let it land safely on the green, after which it runs along the ground all the way to the hole.

bunker
A depression in bare ground that is usually covered with sand. Also called a "sand trap". It is considered a hazard under the Rules of Golf.

The chip shot can now be played with the correct downward strike. You should NOT be trying to slide the clubface under the ball, nor should you be trying to scoop the ball into the air.

After you chip, start with the nearest ball to the hole, and with your putter attempt to hole each one out. This helps simulate the pressure of an actual game situation.

When do I Chip?
When your ball is close to the edge of the green, to roughly 20 yards away is considered chipping range.

To execute a chip shot, use either a 7 or 8 iron (although you should try to use every club in your bag to hit this shot). Narrow your stance and hold the club down towards the bottom to the grip.

When facing a chip across a long green, put the ball back in your stance, close the face of the club, and take it back inside the target line. In effect, you will be hooking the shot, and the ball will come out low and running.

The ability to chip well in golf can make all the difference between an average round and a great one. But when should you chip, and what club should you use? Here are some golf chipping instructions that you will find useful.

Don't confuse a chip with a pitch. They are very different techniques. A chip is more like a putt in that there is no pivot. A pitch is more like a regular shot because there is a pivot.

Aside from rare chip-ins or two-putt birdies on par 5s, the only way to score is with the putter. It is surprising how little golfers practice putting compared to time spent on the other clubs.
