I need help with chip shots. I liked your idea of the visual tip about the bunker shot. I am hoping you can provide something similar that I can visualize when I have to chip. I tend to freeze when the shot calls for a chip.

Chip shot
Used within yards of the green, with no intervening hazard; ball in air 1/2 or less of the total distance and rolls the rest of the way. Can use any iron, depending on distance you want the ball to roll.
CHIP SHOT-TECHNIQUE

A chip shot is a low lofted shot that lands hard on the green and has lots of roll to it. The clubs that should be used for this shot are a 5 iron, 6 iron, or 7 iron. This shot requires the hands to be lower on the grip with hands ahead of the ball.
A chip shot is one which puts just enough height on the ball to let it land safely on the green, after which it runs along the ground all the way to the hole.

bunker
A depression in bare ground that is usually covered with sand. Also called a "sand trap". It is considered a hazard under the Rules of Golf.
The chip shot is a small swing, where the ball lands generally on the front part of the green and rolls to the cup. Club selection determines the amount of roll.
The chip shot can now be played with the correct downward strike. You should NOT be trying to slide the clubface under the ball, nor should you be trying to scoop the ball into the air.

To execute a chip shot, use either a 7 or 8 iron (although you should try to use every club in your bag to hit this shot). Narrow your stance and hold the club down towards the bottom to the grip.

We are obsessed by watching the top golfers play the lob shot under all conditions.

Well the school of thought for many teachers is that great chip shots are on the ground and rolling ASAP!!! I believe in this too unless there is an obstacle: a series of mogles, groundwater, damaged turf, sprinkler head, etc. etc.

When you are playing a chip shot from off the edge of the green, I think it is a sensible practice to visualize this kind of stroke as a close cousin to the putting stroke.
To understand the mechanics of the chip shot. Chipping requires a slow tempo and a crisp swing. Stand close to the ball for a more direct swing path. Keep your weight left, body leaning slightly left, with hands ahead of the ball.
Mastering the Chip Shot: Foolproof way to consistently chip the ball so you catch it cleanly every time and put the right amount of roll and loft on your shots.
To understand the nature of the takeaway think of the simple chip shot. In it the backswing is performed entirely with the hands and arms. No body or shoulder movement is involved. If the shoulders turned, the club would be taken off line.

Even if you can only hit 20 chip shots before your round, try to do so. Although hitting 20 chips is not going to make you great it will if you hit 20 chips every time before you go to play.
Hold the finish position on a chip shot. Two feet past impact and the clubhead still hasn't passed the hands. You can't get to this position without firm wrists. An early release or breaking of the wrists, will cause an instant breakdown.
CHIP IN - when a chip shot goes in the hole; holing out.
CHIP-AND-RUN - a chip shot played with a golf club that has a low loft to cause the ball to roll after landing usually on the putting green.
How is a Pitch shot different from a Chip shot?
It is different in quite a lot of ways. The shot will tend to fly higher, it will carry further through the air and roll less along the ground, in other words the ball will stop quicker.
By the way, the chipping motion typically taught, which has the left hand (for right handers) staying exaggeratedly ahead of the clubhead through the entire motion, is wrong. Watch how tour players hit most of their chip shots-they release the club, ...
