This is especially true when chipping: the muscles in the hands and arms tighten, making it difficult to hinge the club up in the back swing, as it naturally should.

Chipping Stroke
The chipping motion is similar to the putting stroke. Keep weight left, wrists firm and in front of clubhead. The goal is to get the ball on the green as soon as possible, rolling toward the hole.
Chipping is a little shot that you play, when your Ball is close to the edge of the green. The shot has a little bit of lift, bounces and rolls along the ground to the hole. The shot requires no power, just skill and touch.

Whether setting up for a chip or a pitch, the address position should be the same.
Chipping Iron: An iron used to chip the ball onto the green.
Choke: When a golfer looses his nerve and therefore plays an important or hard shot badly.
Chunk: When the club strikes the ground well behind the ball.
CHIPPING BEFORE THE ROUND
If you have time, and if you are at a course that allows you to chip to the practice green, try to do so before every round. Even if you can only hit 20 chip shots before your round, try to do so.
Chipping is better option than pitching
When you are close to the green, do you hit a chip shot or a pitch shot?
Chipping a golf ball is one of the easiest golf actions there is (or at least it should be) apart from putting. But the biggest problem I see when most golfers chip is that they use their wrists way too much.
Chipping is a stroke with no wrist-cock - less "air time" and more "ground time." Think of it as a putt with a lofted club. Pitching is a lofted shot, played with a cocked left wrist; it has more carry and less roll.
Chipping is very similar to putting in that there is no body motion, it's simply shoulders and arms. There's no pivot. If you can learn the proper technique in chipping, you're guaranteed to take strokes off your score.

I think chipping is too often overlooked. Hey, maybe it's not the most glamourous shot to hit, but that doesn't make it any less important. A great chip can help you make or break par faster than any putt.
