choke-up-- To grip a club closer to the head, further down the grip.
chop-- Striking the ball with a short, hacking motion.

CHOKE - to become nervous while playing golf to where your affect your game in a negative way; to grip the club lower on the shaft than normal.

choke To grip the club further down the shaft of the club (usually to gain control of the direction of trajectory).

Choke: This word has two meanings: One is to grip lower on the club than normal. The other definition in golf to play poorly because of self-imposed pressure.
Choke Down: To hold the club lower on the grip.

Many golfers think they have to grip it hard to hit it hard. Actually, a tense muscle is a slow muscle! Clubhead speed is crucial for distance, and light muscles can work faster.

Choking is bad, and it falls somewhere between having the yips and brain surgery. It doesn't help much that everyone does it and does it big time and does it often. What matters is that you do it.

My performance suffered severely from nervousness -- okay, I suppose you could say that I totally choked. The second and third occasions were far better, but I still have a long way to go to be comfortable playing in front of others.

Take your normal grip, choke up or somewhat down if needed.
3. Regarding the driver, woods and low irons - Your feet are a slightly wider for a a driver and wood shot, stand a little bit further back from the ball.

It helps me at 64 years old to choke down a little on the club and take a nine-iron instead of a full wegde. Still a long ball hitter, it is humbling to back off, but the birdies keep on rolling in!

Hitting your driver off the fairway often helps on long par4's with an open green. Remember to choke down on the club about an inch-and-a-half and move the ball back in your stance. Swing a little shorter and easier.
