It is important not to un-cock your wrists too soon, because you’ll lose the power, but you don’t want to leave them cocked through impact because you won’t have a chance to unleash the power. So practice and find that happy medium.

The first picture to the left shows a considerable amount of wrist cock early into the follow through. This is a classic sign of a golf swing in which the arms and body are at odds with one another.

Notice in the photo above that there is a slight wrist cock. This is important as you need to cock the wrist to help deliver a slightly downward blow through the shot.

Pitching, on the other hand, is a 1/2 or 3/4 swing with more weight shift and wrist cock that allows the ball to carry close to the hole with very little roll.

Just make a full shoulder turn and a good wrist cock then return the club from where it came from! When I say swing easy I do not mean decelerate on the downswing.

I took lessons in college, where we focused on grip, stance and wrist cock, and then we were let loose on the driving range. I was told to bend my knees, shorten my swing, keep my eye on the ball, etc.

Starting back from this position forces you to blend your arm and body motions. Let centrifugal force cock your wrists; don't force the cocking action.

To hit a high bunker shot that stops quickly, set the blade of the sand wedge open at address, use a weak grip, and play the ball forward. Cock the club quickly and release your hands. The result is a high shot that lands dead.

One drill to improve this is to cock your wrists at the top of the backswing so that there's a right angle between your arm and club. Pull the club down in slow motion, while doing your best to retain this angle.

Think low and slow in the takeaway. Arms and shoulders stay "connected" for a one piece takeaway. Good hip turn and proper weight shift are important. Control any premature wrist cock.
