dogleg-- A golf hole that which has a fairway that bends to the left or the right.

Dogleg - A hole whose fairway is marked by a gentle or acute bend, usually about 200 yards from the tee, with a hazardous area with the bend; this poses the player the problem of attempting the carry or of playing more safely.

Dogleg: The design of a golf hole (a par 4 or 5) in which the layout changes direction, usually at the position a drive is designed to land.

If the first hole is a dogleg left, I'll try to hit a draw. If the hole normally plays into the wind, I'll try to hit a low second shot. Then I'll play the second hole, hitting a high downwind drive.

From the tee you look at a small right to left dogleg fairway that is skinny and hard to hit. Best to aim left, cutting off a little of the hillside, and let 'er rip.

The 3-wood is not only more forgiving than the driver, but it's also much easier to intentionally curve, which can come in handy on doglegs and is genuinely useful when you absolutely need to hit the fairway.
