explosion shot-- A type of bunker shot in which the sand behind the golf ball is struck with a large amount of force displacing a large amount of sand.

EXPLOSION SHOT or SPLASH SHOT - a golf shot played from the bunker and created by the clubface "splashing" into the sand and removing the ball on a bed of sand.

This is because they were taught that the only way to come out of a trap is with an explosion shot, a rather unnatural stroke for the beginner since the club head has to strike the sand behind the ball and does not strike the ball itself.

Topping
Topping a shot is when the club hits well above the center of the ball causing it to run along the ground.

To do this you must move the ball forward in your stance and attempt an explosion shot similar to that in the sand. You don't actually hit the ball, but you make contact with the grass behind the ball with your sand wedge.
