Fairway woods are designed to be swept with a shallower, or more horizontal, angle of approach than the irons.
Fairway Bunker
Play ball in the middle of the stance to insure you hit the ball first. Dig your feet in for stability. Your stance can be square or slightly open. Your number one goal is to get out of the bunker.
To hit a driver and your fairway woods, it is important to shift your weight on the downswing. This move will help create clubhead speed and attack the ball at the correct angle.
If so, hit your fairway woods. Golfers tend to shy away from them just because they're longer. Don't let the added shaft length scare you! In fact, there's an upside to fairway woods.
Problem: You can't seem to find the fairway with your driver, OB right, trees to the left, your inaccuracy off the tee is moving that handicap higher and higher. How do you put that tee shot in the fairway?

fairway wood-- A wood or metal wood other than the driver. Fairway woods have more loft on them so it is possible to a hit a ball lying in the fairway or in a decent lie with them.
Fairway: The short, mown grass between the tee and the green. This is the best place to be because the ball is sitting up nicely and is easy to hit. Off the fairway is the rough, which is not a good place to be because the grass is long.

Fairway

Fairway wood ...
Fairway - This is the area of a golf hole between the Tee and the Green. It is closely mown in compared to the Rough making it easier to strike the golf ball cleanly.

Fairway Wood Sometimes now called a fairway metal since they are now made from metal. The fairway wood is typically a rounded club and looks a bit like a smaller version of a driver. They often come numbered 3, 5, 7 and 9.

Fairway woods, by design have more mass and because of this mass have the center of gravity low and at least 3 inches from the face. These characteristics have a tremendous benefit to produce lift when speed is lacking.
FAIRWAY - this is the area on the golf course, which lies directly between the tee box and the green and is cut really short and maintained really nice. You want to hit from this area if at all possible.

Lush fairways and flat greens might be the more traditional golfing environs, but the view is no less spectacular when playing golf atop a skyscraper. The trend is not a new one.

READ FROM THE FAIRWAY. This sort of assessment is best done from the fairway from 100 to 150 yards out. The general pattern of drainage always heads to the lowest area, both locally and at a distant remove.
Tight fairway - A narrow fairway.
