Fat: Shot type in which a player hits behind the ball, resulting in a much shorter shot than normal. Fat shots are often characterized by a player taking an excessive divot.

Fat Shot: When the club strikes the ground well behind the ball.
Featherie: Early golf balls with a core of compressed feathers inside a leather outer.
Field: The players in a tournament.

Let's make things simple: if you're hitting fat shots, your swing is bottoming out too early. The golf swing is essentially U-shaped and the bottom of your U is occurring before the ball, causing you to hit the ground first.

Losing body fat is one of the quickest ways I know to improve performance. That extra abdominal fat you may be carrying around with you affects almost everything you do on the golf course, except riding in the cart.

If you are struggling through a round hitting fat shots (hitting under the ball) and/or topped shots (hitting near the top of the ball) your problem may be an incorrect weight shift.

Get rid of those 'fat' shots

Sometimes I will skull the ball across the green, other times hit it fat and hardly advance the ball. I definitely do not feel as comfortable when finessing those short shots - arms tighten up and unsure how hard to hit the ball. Any suggestions.

Play the ball a bit farther back in your stance which could counteract the tendency to hit this shot fat.

Wide sole designs also help prevent digging, or "fat" shots. Conversely, some "tour-level" clubs feature a narrow sole design that is preferred by better players because it allows more control over shot trajectory.

The dreaded dropkick and/or scoop at impact are evident when the clubhead is ahead of the hands at impact. When the bottom of the swing is behind the ball, you'll hit fat shots. When the clubhead is on its way up at impact, you'll hit thin shots.
