Heck, the ferrule plays no functional role in the club other than for aesthetic purposes, so one could argue there are only three main components to any golf club. The club heads are purchased based on your choice in style and forgive-ability.

A small sleeve that replaces the traditional ferrule in golf clubs. The polymer sleeve fits over the tip of the shaft and extends down into the hosel, decreasing the stress on the tip.
Look at the ferrules, (the plastic piece that the shaft goes into before the club head.) if they are unseated from the hosel it could be an indication of other problems. Check the heads for gouges, cracks, rust, etc.
