"Fore!" is shouted as a warning when it appears possible a golf ball may hit other players or spectators. It means "ahead", and it's believed to come from the military "beware before", which was shouted when shooting battery behind the troops.

Fore Caddie
One who directs golfers to their balls during competition. The fore caddy positions himself in the vicinity of where the tee shots will land, and marks its placement.

Fore: The most dreaded sound in golf. It means that someone has hit a wild shot and it could be coming straight at you. Pronounced four, it is yelled to warn other players.

This is a common courtesy of grand proportions. It's not embarrassing to have to yell FORE because you hit a bad shot. Swallow your pride and yell it loud.

The reason is if you have a tight grip, you tighten your fore arms and this will result in a open or closed face at impact. Don't believe me, grab a club with just your left hand and set it on the ground with the face pointing at some target.
