Lag Putting Drill
The string drill is my preferred lag putting practice.For many years I have used this drill in my one day golf schools, summer junior programs, evening clinics, and individual putting lessons.

What is lag? We've all heard this term. Lag can be defined as, "trailing" or "following." Golf instruction tells us we need to have it but why?

Lag
A long putt designed to simply get the ball close to the hole. Or, in the downswing, how far the clubhead "lags" behind the hands prior to release.
lag-- A putt that is hit very softly in order to make sure it doesn't run to far past the hole. Typically hit on a downward sloping putt and/or a very fast green.
lateral hazard-- A hazard that runs parallel to the line of play.

Lag is a very difficult thing to achieve, and it will take time and patience, and a lot of practice, but it's getting toward the winter months and it's time we get to work for next spring.

Developing a "Lag"
Successful drivers all have a "lag" in their swing. On the downswing, the wrists must release their energy at some point. When this happens is key. The closer to impact with the ball, the more stored power there will be.

When you execute the swing properly, the leadership of the legs creates a lag of the hands and clubhead, resulting in what's commonly called a delayed release.

The tournament pros sink 50% of their 6-foot putts. Line up 10 balls around the hole and see how many you sink. Then practice sinking 12 foot putts. Finally, practice a few lag putts (very long putts that lag to the hole).

During the downswing, turning as a unit will help you avoid having the clubhead lag behind the hands at impact. This can lead to the dreaded .block,. which results in shots pushed to the right or sliced.
"Nice lag" can usually be translated to "lousy putt." Similarly, "tough break" can usually be translated "way to miss an easy one, sucker."
