Lesson #30: On Long Irons, Don't Try
If there's one area of the game that separates good golfers from middle and high handicappers, it's the ability to play long-iron shots.
long irons-- Irons with relatively little loft that typically hit the ball a fairly long distance. Such clubs include the 1, 2, and 3 irons.
Long Irons: The relatively straight-face and longer hitting irons.
Loose Impediments: Any natural object that is not fixed or growing. This can include loose stones, twigs, branches, molehills, dung, worms and insects.
Long Iron: Generally refers to irons numbered one through four with lower loft angles.
Long Irons: The 2, 3 and 4 irons.
Loose Impediments: Natural objects on the course which are not fixed into place such as stones. Generally, if they interfere with play, they may be removed except within a hazard.

With long irons, I encourage people to sweep the ball as opposed to hit down on it, meaning I'd like to see golfers hit the ball right at the apex of the swing arc.

For example, if the hole requires a long iron or wood shot to the green, the hole should be located deeper in the green and further from its sides than should be the case if the hole requires a short pitch shot.
The 2-iron, 3-iron, 4-iron and 5-iron are called Long irons. The loft of these clubs is low. Although the 5-iron also is called a Mid iron. The other Mid irons are the 6-iron and the 7-iron, with a slightly higher loft.

Which one is best for you?
That depends. If you are currently having success with higher lofted woods, then staying with woods makes perfect sense.

For mid irons you want to have the ball in the middle of your stance and for long irons you want it slightly further forward.
Wedges
When hitting a wedge you want a slightly narrower stance and the ball should be in the middle of your stance.
This is the part of the game where shots are hit with long irons and woods.
