Part II: The Long Game
Lesson #30: On Long Irons, Don't Try
If there's one area of the game that separates good golfers from middle and high handicappers, it's the ability to play long-iron shots.

long irons-- Irons with relatively little loft that typically hit the ball a fairly long distance. Such clubs include the 1, 2, and 3 irons.

Long Irons: The relatively straight-face and longer hitting irons.
Loose Impediments: Any natural object that is not fixed or growing. This can include loose stones, twigs, branches, molehills, dung, worms and insects.

Long Irons: The 2, 3 and 4 irons.
Loose Impediments: Natural objects on the course which are not fixed into place such as stones. Generally, if they interfere with play, they may be removed except within a hazard.

Long Irons: The 1-4 irons. (The long irons are often difficult for people to hit, so PGA Professionals often recommend replacing them with fairway woods.) ...

With the long irons and woods, the ball will also begin to the left. However, these lower-lofted clubs give players the feeling that the ball will not get airborne, so the tendency is to help the ball into the air by "opening" the club face at impact, ...

With long irons, I encourage people to sweep the ball as opposed to hit down on it, meaning I'd like to see golfers hit the ball right at the apex of the swing arc.

The 2-iron, 3-iron, 4-iron and 5-iron are called Long irons. The loft of these clubs is low. Although the 5-iron also is called a Mid iron. The other Mid irons are the 6-iron and the 7-iron, with a slightly higher loft.

To swing with balance and tempo while hitting long irons and woods. Don.t try to swing too fast. A smooth swing generating the proper clubhead speed will produce more consistent and positive results than a sudden, short violent effort.

Both Parry and Swanson fired their tee-shots down the left center of the fairway, leaving themselves only long irons into the par 5.

Are you having trouble getting the ball up in the air with your long irons? If so, hit your fairway woods. Golfers tend to shy away from them just because they're longer. Don't let the added shaft length scare you! ...

Consider ditching the fairway woods and long irons
A good alternative to fairway woods and long irons are hybrids.

I've always thought most recreational players would be better off eliminating their long irons down to a 5-iron. The new choices in woods make me even more convinced of that.

Hybrid: A versatile club that serves as a replacement for hard-to-hit long irons. Their construction borrows features from both long irons and fairway woods.

A short iron stance will be two inches narrower and the stance for long irons and woods should be two inches wider.

If you do not hit your long irons often, or at all, you may want to consider adding a hybrid to your bag. Women and seniors will especially benefit from the high trajectory the club allows.

Nike says of the Slingshots that the metal bar arcing from heel to toe positions the centre of gravity low, rearward and in the heel of long irons to help square the clubhead at impact and to create a higher ball flight for long, soft-landing shots.

- The correct ball position for the long irons and fairway woods is two balls toward the target-side foot from center (two balls left for the right-hander).

some players prefer to use these clubs in place of the long irons. Distinct changes have been made in the materials used for the clubheads of woods.

With today's stronger lofted long irons, many golfers are going to higher lofted woods or hybrids.
Which one is best for you?
That depends. If you are currently having success with higher lofted woods, then staying with woods makes perfect sense.

Long Game: Shots hit with long irons and woods. Also could be John Daly's game.
Loop: Slang for "to caddy." Or a round of golf. Or a change in the path of the clubhead during the swing.
Low-Handicapper: Good player.
