Muff

muff-- To badly mishit a golf shot.
mulligan-- A term for a second, free shot hit without penalty after the first one has been hit poorly in a casual golf game.

Muff: To mis-hit a shot.
Mulligan: A shot taken if the first one is missed. Mulligans are used frequently in the USA (and not really in many other countries) but are not allowed under the rules of golf.

Muff To mis-hit a shot. Mulligan A second shot that is allowed to be taken in friendly play when the player has "muffed" (see above) the first one. Not allowed by the rules. Municipal Course A public course owned by local government.

No matter what causes a golfer to muff a shot, all his playing partners must solemnly chant "You looked up," or invoke the wrath of the universe.
The higher a golfer's handicap, the more qualified he deems himself as an instructor.

Muff - To miss-hit a shot.
Mulligan - Mr Mulligan was a Scottish golfer in the early days of golf who would whiff shots and not count them in his score. The practice was named after him.
