open stance-- Body posture in which the left foot (for a right-handed golfer) is pulled away from parallel (backward) with the intended target line. An open stance can be used to produce a fade shot.

Open Stance: A player has an open stance if, at address, his/her right foot (for a right-handed player) is closer to the target line than the right. For a left-handed player, the left foot is closer to the target line.

Open Stance: At address the golfer stands with their front foot further from the ball line than their back foot. An open stance is used by a player when they want to fade or slice the ball.

Open Stance: When the left or lead foot is pulled back farther from the target line than the rear or right foot. This stance generally helps promote a left-to-right ball flight.

Open Stance
The left foot is withdrawn from the intended line of flight. Opening the stance will usually cause the ball to fade or slice by imparting 'clockwise' spin on the ball.

6) AN OPEN STANCE FOR A RIGHT-HANDED PLAYER MEANS
a) the left foot is further away from the target line than the right foot
b) the right foot is further away from the target line than the left foot ...

In the open stance, your left foot is slightly drawn back from the intended line of flight, causing the hips and body to face slightly to the left.

With an open stance, keep weight evenly distributed and play ball one inch forward of center, with club face slightly open. Make smooth three-quarter swing, letting chest turn away from target on backswing.

2) Use an open stance where the feet are aimed six feet left of the flagstick and an open club face where the club face is pointed four feet to the right of the flagstick.

I have noticed that those players who use the "wide-open stance" invariably are hard hitters and very wild in direction. Just consider that if you spread your feet apart and brace yourself very firmly your natural instinct is to swing hard.

The reason this drill is so important, is that if you have an open stance, your tendency is to slice or fade your golf shots. If you have a closed stance, you will often hook your golf shots.

If your at a greenside bunker, use the approximate swing length that would land the ball in the hole on a fly.

Assume a narrow and slightly open stance, the ball position is middle (if your lie is bad move your position more towards the back foot). Position your weight and hands ahead of the ball towards your front foot.

Technique - your feet and hips will have a slightly open stance. This will allow your hands and arms to move through impact without hinging your wrist. Your feet will be close together. The ball position will be back towards your right foot.

Start most bunker shots with a slightly open stance. The ball should be played forward, just inside the front foot. Once in position, get ready to swing.

Most teaching pros favour the traditional bunker shot approach, played with an open stance and your feet and shoulders aligned to the left of the target.
This approach works well for many golfers, but not for everyone.

Hit a half-dozen wedges, using impact tape or talcum powder on the clubface to check the pattern to see if contact is on the toe. An open stance creates an out-to-in swing. Toe hits also could result from swinging over the top.

For example, if you have a functional short leg on your left side, when you take your stance your hips will rotate resulting in an open stance. You might think that you are square to the target line, but you are not.
